In 1979, the Polish part of the Białowieża Forest was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The forest is one of the last places where you can witness the ecosystem of the lowland primeval forest with your own eyes. In the Białowieża Forest, you can find European bisons, and in addition to them, there are approximately 50 species of mammals, around 200 species of birds, and 1,000 species of insects. The oldest oaks growing in the Białowieża Forest are reminiscent of King Władysław Jagiełło. The oaks in Białowieża have record-breaking trunks in terms of height and width, which made them a sought-after export commodity in past centuries, with their wood being used, for example, in the construction of ship masts.
